The history of the National Art Fair (NK) goes back more than half a century. The first NK was organized in November 1965, in the Palmentuin, in the historic heart of Paramaribo. For years this was a tradition, although the venue changed occasionally. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, this came to an end, partly due to the economic crisis in the country. The Rotary Club of Paramaribo ensured that the NK was restored in 1988. With the exception of 1991, the National Art Fair has been held every year since then.
The NK was first held in Hotel Krasnapolsky in 2018. This year, this beautiful location once again opens its doors to visual art. Among the participants are painters, sculptors, ceramists, photographers and digital artists. Thousands of visitors can enjoy this for a week and a half. For many Surinamese people, the NK is the first introduction to the visual arts.
