Wynwood Walls, walls transformed into huge painting canvases

Art has no boundaries and that is what you will notice here in Wynwood, a neighborhood near Miami International Airport. Every inch of wall in the street has been painted on.

At first glance the neighborhood does not seem to be attractive, but all of a sudden this perception changes. When you turn into NW 2nd Avenue there are no vagrants roaming the streets, but only tourists. They walk around the street in large and small groups. What is particularly striking here is the motley spectrum of colors. Art has no boundaries and that is what you will notice here in Wynwood, a neighborhood near Miami InternationaAirport.

Every inch of wall in the street has been painted on – however high the wall might be. From this now famous street, this stunning street art spreads over the side streets.  There is a wide variety of art: abstract, realist, visual, three-dimensional and naïve.

Do not be surprised when the smell of spray paint enters your nose, because that is what most artist make use of to ‘paint’. That is why this form of street art also belongs here: graffiti. At the center of the attraction is Wynwood Walls, a ‘garden’ with walls on which famous international artists from that period worked on in 2009.

To learn more about all this there are several tours each day, starting at different times. Or visit: http://www.thewynwoodwalls.com/overview.  At Wynwood Walls there is also a store and a large art gallery.

The best time to visit the place is in the afternoon. When the sun sets, the lighting gives a different atmosphere. You will hear the music coming out of nice cafes and trendy restaurants. Just go in, have a coffee or order a cocktail and enjoy the feeling of freedom. The spin-off has also provided non-food stores. But you don’t go to Wynwood for shopping – you go there to marvel at all that creative minds have displayed there. Wynwood is a must-see that you will include in your next trip to Miami with Surinam Airways.
